Publication of the Book “The Modes of Iranian Dastgahi Music” by the Roudaki Foundation

The Roudaki Cultural and Artistic Foundation has published its latest research work in the field of Iranian music, titled “The Modes of Iranian Dastgahi Music.”

Roudaki Foundation: this book is the result of several years of collaboration between music researchers Sajad Pourghanad and Seyed Pouria Nasiri, with Farhoud Amirani, Arvin Sedaghatkish, and Salman Salak serving as its scientific reviewers.
The book was edited by Mina Akbari Javid and its cover was designed by Saba Masoumian.
Aimed at a comprehensive examination, analysis, and redefinition of the modes in Iranian Dastgahi music, this research takes an analytical, critical, and systematic approach to the structure of modes. It seeks to provide a practical reference for researchers, performers, and composers through precise classification of its findings.
Drawing on Mirza Abdollah Boroumand’s Radif as performed by Dariush Talaie, and supported by supplementary sources, the book remains faithful to the authenticity of the Radif while rethinking traditional and sometimes ambiguous concepts such as “Ist” (cadence),“Khatemeh” (closure), and “Seir-e Naghmegi” (melodic flow)—offering new analytical frameworks in their place.
The book is organized into four chapters: Chapter One – The Principle of Analysis: Revisits the concept of the Radif, defines the “Mother Mode,” introduces new methods for representing modes, and examines disputed modes.
Chapter Two – Analysis of the Radif and Study of Modes: Presents a comprehensive analysis of the main and secondary Dastgahs and Avazes from Shur to Rast-Panjgah.
Chapter Three – Analysis of Modal Structures Less Than an Octave: Focuses on specialized study of hexatonic and pentatonic modes and other controversial Gushehs.
Chapter Four – The Modes of Iranian Dastgahi Music at a Glance: Offers a complete map of the identified modes, serving as a concise and practical reference for scholars and musicians alike.
